To All
1) Make up your own mini-plots with your characters, or just be completely random. You could even create three characters with some friends, that is to say you ahve one each, that all meet at Hogwarts. Or perhaps don't have anything like that. Go with the flow. You can't plan your life like you can the RP lives, so maybe live the RP lives like real ones.
2) Be realistic. Get ill. Get hurt. Break a bone. Go to the hospital wing.
Students
1) Go to classes. It sounds simple, it sounds obvious, but go to classes. Doing so means that you will actually do the 'student' bit of being a student here. After that you can do what you want!
2) Use magic. This is a HARRY POTTER Role-Play, so treat it like one. Remember all the spells from the book? What made Harry Potter so magical (literally) in the first place? Try that. Try using some of them. Even for little things - like fetching your homework from the other side of the room using Wingardium Leviosa. They all add up. Magic would get used a lot in a rael-life situation, so treat it like one. Remember, you all have wands!
3) Role-Play out of your cliques and groups. Think about it. In real life, when you're at school, do you only ever see and hear the people that are your close friends? No. In real life you always encounter other people - for example you might bump into your teacher, or someone from another group. You don't have to get on with everyone, you can have an angry thread. But remember, while Hogwarts is big, it isn't so big that you'll only see the same 3 people for 7 terms.
4) Post in all the different boards. Again, you might attempt while at school to be in the same sorts of places all the time - for example, you might tend to frequent classrooms and the canteen, however it's unlikely that those are the only places you'll ever see. Go exploring. Maybe go and visit someone who's in another area. Live a little. Come on, Hogwarts is exciting and big. Not small and boring. There are so many rooms to explore!
5) Keep it real. This is a pet hate of people's when they read through threads. You will only be able to use certain spells at each year level, so don't use more complicated ones. You will only have a certain amount of luck, so don't forget that people get ill too. Or need to eat. Or go to the loo. Or get hay fever. Or... get dirty. Explore the possibilities. Think as if it's a real world. As if you ARE your character.
Professors and Hogwarts Staff
1) Teach your classes. Do the classes properly. Make them interesting. Not just 'today we'll cast this spell, off you go'. Or a simple lecture. Involve and excite the students. Worksheets? Assignments? Maybe in Charms there could be an obstacle course? Do a boggart lesson with DADA. History of Magic could involve visiting different areas of Hogwarts. There are so many possibilities!
2) Interrupt other people's threads. If you are a teacher, you might pass a student. Teachers are always on duty at break and lunchtimes in the real world, so why not in Hogwarts? Just be standing there. Be the person that interacts with a student in a thread. You don't have to just teach classes. Believe it or not, teachers have lives too! Especially in the summer break. RP in the summer, its when you have no work to do so you can get to know people!
3) Interrupt arguments etc. If you see an argument going on in a school, usually a teacher is on the scene within minutes. That's because they HEAR for that sort of thing. Now with Hogwarts, Professors have the benefit of magic too. Interrupt people's fights or disagreements. Get on with it!
4) Give detentions. Take house points. Give house points. Giving detentions is a real life thing and it should be a role play thing too. If someone misbehaves, make them pay for it. Report them. Keep records on them. Remember to fail them if they don't show up to class. Overall, do what a real teacher does. Come on, most of the people on here have spent 10 or 11 years of their lives being taught by teachers. You know how they work!
5) If you set homework, mark it. If you have a final, mark it. Simple.
To staff
1) Please do your jobs. Lock old threads to keep the place tidy. Catch people breaking the rules early on and chide them for it. If you're unsure about punishments or rule-breaking, PM one of the senior staff and they'll help you out.
2) Don't spend all day moderating. OK, it counters the previous point, but you'll get bored if all you do is mod. Enjoy yourself with posting too. Post back to other people's threads.
To world wizards
1) Create mini-plots. Have a bit of fun and figure out what to do with yourselves. You all have jobs in the world, but you have to create the problems that you face in the RPing community. I'll admit, it's difficult, but maybe have two or three people come together to sort it out.
2) Doctors and Nurses and people - remember to create cases. You can always talk about a patient as if they are there, and not have them as a seperate character. Afterall, patients don't talk that much during an operation, do they? Have fun! Make up all sorts of nasty accidents. It can be rather fun (in a morbid way) once you get into it.
3) Don't forget there are all sorts of sub-boards with things for you to do. Go to WAND*MART to do your shopping, bump into an old neighbour and have a fight over a past disagreement. Whatever.
